What Are Merchant Mariner Physicals?
Merchant Mariner physicals are a type of military physical examination. They are required for admittance to the U.S. Coast Guard. They may also be required for grade raises if an applicant hasn’t completed one within three years of applying. Merchant Mariner physicals determine if the examinee is healthy and free from medical conditions and/or physical limitations that might prevent them from performing their duties or affect vehicle operation.
What Are PHA Physicals?
Periodic Health Assessment (PHA) Physicals are a type of routine physical examination required by the military. They are designed to keep servicemen and women physically fit and medically ready to deploy at any time. They look for warning signs of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and other chronic conditions. PHA physical exams typically must be completed every year.

FAA Physicals
Just as commercial truck drivers get routine physicals to ensure that it’s safe for them to be on the road, pilots receive routine physical exams to make sure it’s safe for them to be in the air. These exams, called FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) physicals, were created to protect the health and safety of air and space pilots and travelers. Like all physicals, they cover a variety of areas, including blood pressure, vision, hearing, mental health, and more.
Merchant Mariner and Seafarer Physicals
Merchant mariners are licensed or in-training sailors working on U.S. flagged vessels that are overseen by the U.S. Department of Transportation and/or U.S. Coast Guard (USCG). Everyone working on a ship must be capable of supporting emergency response for the vessel, regardless of whether they are directly responsible for ship operations. Merchant mariners must have credentials issued by the USCG-governed National Maritime Center, which include a drug screen and physical certifying their ability to assist in emergency response. Seafarers belong to the Seafarers International Union, which requires membership credentials from the National Maritime Center.
