Concentra Colleague Spotlight: The Dempsey Challenge

With an estimated 1.6 million new cases diagnosed in the U.S. each year, most people have been impacted by cancer in some way. Cancer is an ugly disease, and an expensive one to treat. The cost of caring for cancer patients and their families could reach $156 billion by 2020.

The Dempsey Center strives to make a difference by providing “free support, education, and integrative medical services to anyone impacted by cancer.” Founded in 2008 in honor of actor Patrick Dempsey’s mother, Amanda Dempsey, the Dempsey Center provides extensive cancer and wellness services.

Every year, the Dempsey Center holds a fundraising event called the Dempsey Challenge. This walk/run/cycling event is held in Lewiston, Maine, with every dollar raised directly benefiting the Dempsey Center. Concentra has proudly sponsored the Dempsey Challenge since its inception nine years ago, and pulls together a team of colleagues every year to help fundraise and participate in the event. Local participants from Saco Bay PT, another subsidiary of Select Medical, were also able to join.

At this year’s Dempsey Challenge, Team Concentra not only hit their goal of raising $50,000, but exceeded it by over $3,000 and counting. This made them the top fundraising team for the Dempsey Challenge, and they were presented with a special award.

The team captain for Concentra, Sue Britting, shared her excitement and gratitude for this year’s success:

“I am so proud of this team and what was accomplished, and am so encouraged by what we did. If you participated, donated to a participant, or volunteered - THANK YOU! I am grateful to work for a company that allows and encourages colleagues to be part of an event like this, helping those affected by cancer receive free services and resources. It’s the Concentra Way to help others, even outside of our centers, with a healing focus, a selfless heart, and a tireless resolve. We’re already looking forward to next year and hope you will join us!”
