Concentra Keeps You Flu-Free for the Holiday Season

With Thanksgiving a week early this year, Concentra, a subsidiary of Humana Inc., is offering some easy ways to avoid the flu while sharing tidings and giving thanks during the holiday season.

The holiday season means increased travel, frequent gatherings, crowded shops, and an increased opportunity to pick up harmful viruses. In fact, 80 percent of cold and flu germs are spread through touching contaminated surfaces or sharing close contact with others who are ill. The flu is an extremely contagious virus that spreads easily to others and can cause serious health issues. It shouldn’t be the reason for missing the holiday season.

Each year, more than three million people become ill with the flu, leading to sick days, reduced workforce capacity, missed school days, costly doctor visits and medication—creating an additional financial impact at the holiday season. But Concentra recommends a few simple precautions to help make the holidays full of sentiment, not sickness:

  • Rinse and repeat: Viruses can live on surfaces for up to 48 hours, so frequent hand washing can help to protect against spreading and sharing germs.
  • Sleep in: Get plenty of rest. A regular sleep schedule will help to keep you refreshed and improve your immunity.
  • Get a flu vaccine: An annual flu vaccination offers the most effective protection against the flu and is recommended for everyone over the age of six months. This year’s flu vaccines have already been released, are completely new formulations for this year’s strains, and available at all Concentra locations across the nation.
"Typically the holiday season surrounds the peak of flu season. During that time, there is an increase of individuals interacting in heavy trafficked areas such airports, malls, work, and school," said Senior Vice President of Medical Operations Bill Lewis, M.D. "The flu shot is the best defense against contracting the flu virus and is available at our urgent care centers across the country."

Whether staying in town or traveling the nation this season, Concentra delivers treatment for a wide range of injuries and illnesses, including colds and flu, minor burns, upset stomachs and many other conditions. For more information and additional tips on flu prevention, visit
