Perform pre-review case preparation of the peer review template utilizing information from the review of clinical records and a review of the appropriate protocols/ guidelines.


The Details

  • Categorize case medical records by listing of type, author of record and date of service
  • Select appropriate clinical guidelines according to jurisdictional requirements and the specific request made by the treating provider
  • Copy and paste the applicable parts of the clinical guidelines into the designated area in the report template
  • Prepare a clinical summary utilizing the guidelines and medical records as a basis for the report and enter into the report template
  • Make a medical necessity determination based on all of the above and enter in the case notes and the appropriate computer system field
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor


  • RN or LVN with current and unrestricted Texas nursing license

Job-related experience

  • At least 5 to 7 years of previous experience as a licensed nurse in a clinical environment with direct patient care
  • At least 2 years utilization review experience, three or more years preferred
  • Worker’s Compensation UR experience is preferred
  • Experience selecting clinical guidelines or criteria
  • Computer experience including Microsoft Office and preferably experience using electronic medical records

Job-related skills/competencies

  • Must have an excellent understanding of medical terminology
  • Must have an understanding of musculoskeletal terminology, procedures, and treatments
  • Must be familiar with medication names
  • Must be able to utilize a reference source to look up procedures and medications
  • Must be able to select an appropriate practice guideline for a requested procedure
  • Must have excellent written communications skills and ability to compose written reports using correct grammar and spelling
