A commercial commodity for more than 50 years, more than half of the worldwide production of vermiculite from 1925 to 1990 was contaminated with asbestos and asbestos-like particles. While vermiculite is no longer mined in the United States, concern remains regarding existing loose-fill fiber insulation in homes and other buildings, and the respiratory illnesses that can result from exposure to it.
