Eczema

Eczema (Dry Skin)

Eczema (dermatitis) is the common name for any of a group of skin conditions marked by dry, red skin that itches and burns. The appearance of the skin can vary by patient and cause, but most often the earliest symptom is intense itching. Symptoms like blisters, weeping lesions, thickened, or dry and scaly skin may also vary. The most common form of eczema is atopic dermatitis which is associated with an allergic cause.

Eczema can occur on any part of the body. In adults, it appears on the face, neck, and on the inside of elbows, knees, and ankles. In infants and children, it appears on the forehead, cheeks, scalp, neck, legs, and on the front of the arms.

No one is sure what causes eczema. It is known to run in families and flare-ups can be triggered by topical allergens, immune disorders, skin irritants (detergents, cosmetics, etc.), changes in temperature and humidity, and sometimes stress.

In general, management is conservative. In most cases avoid frequent washing especially with strong soaps and exposure to any chemicals which will cause further drying and irritation. Mild lotions to soften the skin will help. Avoid allergaens and temperature extremes in any form of eczema. Over the counter hydrocortisone may be useful but lesions can become infected in which case antibiotics may be needed either topical or oral. Watch for redness warmth or puss discharge as signs of infection.
