Cold Sores

Cold sores (fever blisters)

Cold sores (fever blisters) are caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV), a common virus found in human saliva. Forming on the lips and mouth, cold sores are typically distinguished by a group of blisters on a red base that rapidly becomes dry, forms scabs, and takes up to seven to 10 days to heal.

Cold sores often feel crusty and will occasionally itch. They tend to recur in the same places, and it is also possible to feel a tingling or burning sensation at the site shortly before the blisters appear. They can be triggered by a fever, cold, or flu, exposure to the sun, stress, immune system changes, skin trauma–and sometimes there’s no clear cause.

Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV), the virus that causes cold sores is more contagious in individuals who have "wet" or active sores, with the level of risk dropping as the lesions heal or dry. It is primarily spread by contact with infected saliva through kissing or other close contact. Note: A person who has the virus has the potential to pass it to another, even if they are not showing any symptoms at the time. This is why it is so common, and the best prevention is avoiding close contact with anyone who is showing symptoms.

Cold sores will go away on their own. The symptoms can be improved with a simple trip to the drug store. However, if your cold sore seems especially severe or frequently comes back there are prescription medications that can be taken at the onset or when taken on a more regular basis can decrease the frequency of outbreaks.
