The Unique Needs of Maritime Workers
Shipyard and related maritime work has traditionally been hazardous, with an injury-accident rate more than twice that of construction and general industry. Moving and climbing on wet surfaces, along with the activities surrounding general construction; the common use of cranes, derricks and other heavy rigging; the risk of fire during welding and metal cutting; electrical shock as a result of working on wet metal surfaces; exposure to hazardous materials such as asbestos, lead, arsenic, benzene and more; and the hazards associated with working within confined spaces all test the physical well-being of maritime workers. Reflexes, balance, bone density, respiratory health–as well as physical strength–are just a few of the conditions that must be taken into consideration when evaluating an individual for maritime work.
Maritime Worker Pre-Placement Exams
Before proceeding with the physical examination, a physician will carefully review a patient’s health and occupational history. A thorough medical examination will involve the following:
- Complete occupational/medical history
- Musculoskeletal examination
- Evaluation of the respiratory system
- Gastrointestinal examination
- Examination of head, eyes, ears, nose, and throat
- Skin and lymphatic examination
- Neurological evaluation
- Evaluation of the cardiovascular system
- Visual acuity and vital signs, including blood pressure, urine dip test, and more
