Sinus Infections

Sinusitis (sinus infections)

Also called sinusitis, a sinus infection is the inflammation of the sinus cavities and nasal passages. The sinuses are hollow areas in the forehead, cheeks, and between and behind the eyes. When the sinuses become infected, you may feel pressure in the face and head or experience headaches.

Sinus infections often follow a cold or upper respiratory infection and are frequently triggered by viruses. But they can also be caused by allergens, bacteria, pollutants, and fungal infections. Symptoms of sinus infections include headaches, runny nose, sore throat, fever, cough, fatigue, and bad breath.

There are several kinds of sinus infections. Acute viral sinusitis lasts fewer than 4 weeks and occurs less than 3 times a year. Other types of sinus infections last longer. Acute bacterial sinusitis lasts up to 4 weeks, while subacute bacterial sinusitis can last anywhere from 4 to 12 weeks and occurs up to 4 times per year. Another type of sinus infection, chronic sinusitis, typically lasts longer than 4 weeks, and occurs more than 4 times per year.

If you or your child’s symptoms of sinus infection persist for more than 10 days, or you have a fever of over 100.4Ëš F, seek medical attention. You should also see a doctor if over-the-counter medications don’t relieve your symptoms or if you’ve had multiple sinus infections during the past year.

To prevent a sinus infection, it is best to avoid contact with people who have colds or upper respiratory infections. A few more steps you can take to prevent sinus infections are washing your hands, keeping up to date with immunizations, avoiding cigarette smoke, and using a humidifier at home.
