MRSA
Metchicillin-resistant staphyloccus aureus
Methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a type of staph infection that's resistant to the antibiotic methicillin and other common antibiotics as well. Staph is bacteria that exists on the skin of healthy people. However, sometimes it can cause infection.
Workplaces at risk of MRSA
While most staph and MRSA infections occur in hospitals and health care facilities, they can happen in almost any work environment. However, there are some settings that are at greater risk. A rule of thumb for determining these risks is the 5 C's:
- Crowding
- Frequent skin-to-skin contact
- Compromised skin (cuts and scrapes)
- Contaminated items and surfaces
- Lack of cleanliness
