Kidney Stones
What are kidney stones?
Kidney stones (renal calculi) are hard stones made of minerals that form in the kidneys or urinary tract. The most common symptom of kidney stones is the sudden onset of intense pain in the lower back, side, groin, or abdomen. The pain may be accompanied by nausea and vomiting. If an infection is present along with a kidney stone, there may also be fever and chills. On testing, blood is found in the urine.
Normally, the urine contains chemicals that prevent kidney stones from forming. However, kidney stones form if these chemicals do not work.
Kidney stones can contain minerals, including calcium or uric acid. Urinary tract obstruction, dehydration from inadequate fluid intake, and strenuous exercise are factors that can lead to kidney stones. Additionally, men are more likely than women to experience this condition.
