Heart Disease

Heart disease in the workplace

Research is continuing to evolve in terms of establishing clear cause-and-effect relationships between heart disease (coronary artery disease) and factors in the workplace. Yet regardless of the cause, occupational or lifestyle, you still want to strive to provide the best quality care for your employees.

Occupational heart disease causes and risk factors

Toxins such as carbon disulfide, nitroglycerine, and carbon monoxide (especially from vehicle exhaust) are know to affect the heart. Tobacco smoke, extreme heat or cold, too much or too little physical activity, and heavy lifting can all be factors when encountered on the job. Even shift work is known to disrupt the body's normal rhythms and impact heart health.
