Diarrhea

What is diarrhea?

Diarrhea refers to bowel movements (stools) that are loose and watery. Diarrhea is a very common condition and usually not serious, typically lasting two to three days and easily treated with over-the-counter medicines. Diarrhea is generally caused by bacterial or viral infection, certain foods, allergies, and medication, but can also be caused by more serious conditions such as Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome, hyperthyroidism, or colitis.

Uncomplicated diarrhea is characterized by abdominal bloating and/or cramps, loose or watery stools, and a sense of urgency to go to the bathroom. It can also be accompanied by nausea and vomiting, especially if it is caused by a viral infection.

Mild cases of diarrhea can be left to run their course or treated with over-the-counter medications. Because diarrhea can be dehydrating, you should also drink plenty of fluid, ideally between meals and in small but frequent servings throughout the day.
