Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

What is carpal tunnel syndrome?

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) that occurs in spaces between the bone and the fibrous band of tissue that supports the wrist joint, called the carpal tunnel. Irritation or swelling in this area places pressure on the median nerve, resulting in tingling and numbness in the thumb, index, and middle fingers.

Over time, patients can also develop a burning sensation, cramping, weakness, and sharp shooting pains in the forearm. Sufferers may drop things due to a weaker grip and, in chronic cases, deterioration of the hand muscles can occur, especially near the base of the thumb and palm.

How carpal tunnel syndrome affects the workplace

Studies show that carpal tunnel syndrome cases that result in lost work time is greater than the median number reported for back pain. Research also shows a correlation between carpal tunnel syndrome and tasks or occupations that require highly repetitive motions–making carpal tunnel syndrome a primary concern for many employers and their employees.
