Physical Examinations

As specialists in the field of occupational medicine, Concentra's affiliated physicians perform a variety of physical examinations related to employment and the workplace:

  • Pre-Placement and Executive Physicals – to determine whether applicants/employees are medically and physically able to perform their roles
  • Regulatory and Compliance Examinations – to establish a medical baseline for employees in accordance with the appropriate regulatory agency (DOT, OSHA, etc.), and to perform periodic medical monitoring when indicated
  • Fitness-For-Duty Examinations – to confirm that employees can perform their job duties upon return from medical leave
  • Employee Wellness Examinations – to establish baseline medical information as part of companies’ voluntary health and wellness initiatives

How we serve you with Physical ExaminationsHow we serve you with Physical Examinations

Pre-Placement and Executive Physicals

Individuals being evaluated for hire or placement are not required to divulge past medical problems to a prospective employer. In fact, employers cannot ask questions that may reveal past or current disabilities and/or impairments. A medical provider, however, may inquire about past medical and/or physical conditions. For that reason, a physical examination should be an integral part of the hiring process.

The Concentra-affiliated physician will carefully review the patient’s medical and occupational history before proceeding with the physical examination. A thorough medical examination will include at least the following:

  • Complete occupational/medical history
  • Musculoskeletal examination
  • Evaluation of the respiratory system
  • Gastrointestinal examination
  • Examination of head, eyes, ears, nose, and throat
  • Skin and lymphatic examination
  • Neurological evaluation
  • Evaluation of the cardiovascular system
  • Visual acuity and vital signs, including blood pressure, urine dip test

We can also perform additional testing such as:

  • Laboratory testing
  • Pulmonary fit testing
  • X-ray services
  • Audiometric testing

Regulatory and Compliance Examinations

  • Department of Transportation (DOT) Examinations – Our clinicians complete the DOT-required forms and provide the appropriate card expiration dates for rechecks (depending on the individual’s medical condition).

Concentra's affiliated physicians are proud to participate on DOT committees addressing various medical interpretations, specifically the cardiovascular subjects involving blood pressure. Concentra has also written the first certification course for physicians to conduct medical examinations in compliance with the DOT standards. (Although the DOT does not currently certify any existing offered course, we are working toward this goal, and Concentra training aligns with current DOT standards.)

  • OSHA and Other Compliance Monitoring – Concentra understands regulations. We can schedule and perform OSHA-mandated examination testing, record-keeping services, and medical surveillance monitoring. Whether it’s a respirator exam, asbestos monitoring, or hazard communication testing, we can establish baseline results and monitor employees throughout their tenure with the company. Available testing includes:

    • Physical examinations
    • OSHA questionnaire
    • Respiratory fit testing
    • Chest x-rays
    • Audiometric testing
    • Pulmonary function testing
    • Laboratory testing (lead, ZPP, SMAC)
  • Fitness-For-Duty Examinations – Since all jobs include requirements that are unique to that position, Concentra also performs functional testing to ensure that employees can physically perform their jobs. Our ADApt Services Human Performance Evaluation (HPE) helps your company effectively match the physical demands of the job with the physical capabilities of your prospective employee. Best suited for jobs that require a moderate to high level of material handling, the HPE test helps take the guesswork out of the hiring process. Specifically, the test is designed to help your company answer the bottom-line question: "Does this job applicant have the physical capabilities to perform the essential functions of this job?"
